- A conference on ways in which poetry might contribute to the re-envisioning of an urban
environment such as Camden, scheduled for Spring 2003.
- An annual book fair for literary magazines and small press publishers, held in conjuction
with the Summer Writers Conference on the grounds of Rutgers University in Camden, scheduled for
Summer 2003.
- Public Poetry in Camden: Working with students in Urban Planning, who must do a viable
project in their senior year, interns could plan and place poetry in Camden's public spaces. A
poem of Whitman's could appear outside the Whitman Center, for example.
- Poetry in Motion: A malleable installation of poetry placed at PATCO High Speedline
stations. Some of these poems could come from Camden residents, after interns and other
interested students help residents in teaching sessions in Camden schools and community centers.
- Poetry Readings: By partnering w/ the Free Library of Philadelphia, Kelly Writers House, and
the Walt Whitman Cultural Center, we can bring a diverse program of guest authors to Camden.
- Community sessions on poetry at the House: The already-existing Rutgers-Camden annual Spring
and Summer Writers Conferences are hugely successful, illustrating the need for more workshop
programming. The director and interns could organize readings and workshops for Camden students
and community. They could invite entire classes to come in as a kind of field trip, to hear guest
authors, to read their own work, or to work on their own poetry.
- Conferences for teachers, students, and public audiences on topics including house museums
and haiku.
